Local climate
San Jacinto Valley heat with almost no marine relief
The Hemet city page is direct: valley highs in July and August make an uncovered west-facing slab a heat sink, and wood covers have already had one too many summers. A solid or insulated cover, especially DuraCool, is what makes the patio usable overhead. Drop-down shades are what make it usable when the sun comes in under the beam. There is not much Santa Margarita-gap marine air on this side of the county. That is why we talk about tighter weaves for west and south openings in Hemet more often than we do for a north-facing Wildomar patio.
